  • #FeministFriday: Viola Desmond (1914-1965)
.
We’re heading up north for today’s biography to honor the Rosa Parks of Canada. Viola Desmond was a Canadian businesswoman of Black Nova Scotian descent and her visage can be found on the new Canadian $10 bill. After refusing to leave a whites-only area of a movie theatre, she was charged with tax evasion. Yes, the theatrics of racism were alive and well with our Canadian neighbors, too. This is how it went down: The seats on the floor were for whites only and cost 40 cents with a 3 cent tax. Being nearsighted, Desmond sat in one of the floor seats despite purchasing a ticket for the minority space on the balcony for 20 cents with 2 cent tax. So she was forcibly removed causing injury, arrested, and held in jail overnight for attempting to defraud the government. That’s right--defrauding by the 1 cent difference in taxes. There were no formal laws enforcing segregation in movie theaters so the racist powers that be had to find some roundabout way to punish her, thus tax evasion.
.
What. The. Fuck.
.
After paying the $26 fine and tending to her hip injury, Desmond lawyered up and went to trial. She unsuccessfully attempted to file a lawsuit against the theatre and her lawyer unsuccessfully attempted to argue a case for discrimination. In the end, the case was handed over to judicial review and subsequently thrown out for missing deadlines.
.
In 2010, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia Mayann Francis, another black woman, granted Desmond a posthumous free pardon, forty-five years after her death.

  • #throwbackthursday from my 2014 theatrical debut The Fool’s Riddle at Black Box Theatre, Main Street Landing Performing Arts Center
Full article on the sub-character of The Baker’s Daughter here https://www.patreon.com/ecstasyofacripple

Integral to the archetypal Fool character that I portrayed in my 2014 theatrical debut, “The Fool’s Riddle,” is the sub-character referred to as the Baker’s Daughter. While it is inspired in part by ancient Welsh tales, it is a richly layered conundrum with multiple political, historical, societal and spiritual contexts, including an exposure of religious misogyny and the liberation of the feminine from matrices held in place by belief systems. Integral is the societal theme of the woman who has been either raped or categorized as insane by patriarchal culture.
Blodeuwedd, the Maiden archetype in the Welsh Mabinogion, was chased by her rapists and turned into an owl. Her situation is remarked upon by a similar folktale, the Baker's Daughter, in which a maiden refuses to give bread to Christ and is cursed to turn into an owl. Shakespeare's Ophelia, in her prophetic madness, gives the following riddle: “Well, God `ield you! They say the owl was a baker's daughter. Lord, we know what we are, but know not what we may be. God be at your table.“ —Shakespeare: Hamlet. iv. 5.

If you take out all the story's twists and turns and tyrannies and just focus for a moment on the esoteric meaning of this riddle: we turn the unknowable into the known through experience...and in our essence we are unknowable.

1st Day of New Semester: Played @rubyibarra to start all 3 #AsianAmericanStudies classes today! “#TakingNames” is perfect for #FilipinoAmerican Experience class @ #UMich:
. . .
“From Morro Bay to the East Bay, we stay survivin’ where we stay
They keep invading’ where we lay, there’s no debating’ that we pay
That naval base up in Subic Bay
To all the places that they tried to take
From Magellan’s days to Philip’s raid
When the land was raped and they changed the way...”
. . .
{AND when I really DID have to take roll because 40 of us crammed in a small, overheated classroom, Ruby sang the chorus & Nump the hook}:
. . .
“Cause this is roll call
I'm taking names down
We only go raw
I'm takin' aim now
And when it's roll call
They know my name now
I make them all fall
I'm 'bouta break out . . .
There’s some crazy Filipinos in here
From the jungle, yeah the savage is real.”
. . .
THEN when Ruby appears in flashes & split screen in THIS #DawnMabalonIsInTheHeart Tshirt, w/the kasamas’ @ejrdavidphd @kevinnadal #Pinoy books on the shelf & she & Bambu photoshopped in historic 1904 St. Louis Fair programs, TEARS welled up in my eyes!
Dawn would’ve loved it. That #video is #deep. #Scholars should write articles or dissertations on Ruby & OJ’s use of Filipino American #history.
. . .
Then, of course, Ruby’s #Pinay anthem, “Us”, was excellent for my #WomensStudies classes:
. . .
“Yo fuck a story arc if it don’t involve no matriarchs
Our mothers work from the ground up, they craftin' air like ATR
With the butterfly sleeves naka Filipiniana”. . .
#IslandWomanRise #IsangBagsak!
. . .
I don’t know if all the students realize what they’re in for, just hoping they enjoy the ride.
. . .
Salamat, ading Ruby, for your gifts. As Maré Dawn & I told you when we 1st met you: “You’re amazing. We’ve been waiting for you. We dreamed of you in the ‘90s.” #Mabuhay #Makibaka #Mahal

  • Still going on my @thehistorychicks bender. I found these two particularly inspiring, as well as the story of Jane Addams (mother of social work). Some of the stories are less inspiring than stories you may have heard (Pocahontas) because of what actually happened and some less inspiring because these podcasters aren’t mystical (well one might be in a Christian? Way) (ie Marie Leveau) but regardless they are great because they give a well researched understanding of women and their lives for a two hour format.
