A bit of a change from our usual Monday post #whiskyphiles. During the week I got into an online discussion about the issue of the word 'smooth' by someone describing whisky. Whilst I think it is a lazy term, it's a word that the vast majority of whisky drinkers relate to, those being ... the casual drinker. Not the #whiskynerd types. I even referred to the number of bottled that use the word smooth, or similar. This is one of those bottles, by its very definition is a what this feed is about, a #daydramming bottle. #MonkeyShoulder which is a NAS #blendedmalt whisky or (as we called them back in the day) a #vattedmalt whisky;

AGE - ❌ NAS
ABV - ⬇️ low at 40%
NCF - ❄ likely filtered at 40%
NAC - 🖍 again, likely coloured
V4M - 📍📍📍@ 🇦🇺 $49.95AUD;

#MonkeyShoulderMonday - the most affordable bottle I have reviewed on insta. It gets no 📍's until you hit the price point. It's unbeatable. I would buy 3 of these over some $150ish bottles of single malt which are bottled in a simular fashion. It is just shy of cloying to my palate. It's a blend of 3 (hence the 3 monkeys) #Speyside single malts and is part of the famous stable of #WilliamGrantandSons. As such, I can only presume that the malt comes from 1) #Glenfiddich 2) #theBalvenie and 3) this is the guess, #Kininvie.
It has a decent mouthfeel for a 40% whisky. It is quite creamy which lends to a decent grip in the mouth. To me, there is one undeniable note - banana caramel pie. There is stil those typical Speyaide qualities of Manuka honey, heather, bakink spice, orange marmalade, clove heat and butterscotch. But nothing takes away from that first blush, caramelized banana, vanilla cream and caramel. If this was a $100 whisky, i would call it a 6.5⭐'s, at half that, it is a 7.75⭐'s out of 10.

  • #MyWhiskyReview - Glenmorangie Allta Private Edition No.10 ☆ [Recommended]
•
Style: Sweet and Clean
•
Nose:
Fragrant white peaches and apricots gently wrapped around by distinct grainy notes – oat, multigrain bread, muesli, etc. Floral aroma in the form of beer hops, very yeasty, in a nice way. Pear drops lightly coated with vanilla cream, some hay and chartreuse, bit grassy, earthy and musky. Interesting. Dry spice and black peppercorn lightly roasted by fire. Not your usual Glenmorangie, but very nice.
•
Palate:
Ah, the house style returns. Glazed ginger, pear drops taking a hint of grassiness, all sweet and clean. Cereal thoroughly brushed around the core, beer hops and vanilla humming softly at the backseat. Honey mead and just a dab of lemon balm waxing and smoothing the edges. Followed by some Bourbon cask traits, vanilla and oak emerges towards the end. Fresh and delicious.
•
Finish:
Residues of candied orange and ginger continue to linger, faint hints of vanilla oat to finish.
•
Thoughts:
Blink of an eye and we have reached Private Edition Number 10, time flies, doesn’t it? Now Allta is slightly different to its predecessors – instead of cask variations, it has switched its focus to a local wild yeast which replaces the regular stuff that the rest of Scotland is using and bottled on at a slightly higher abv. Result? The impact is rather obvious, we have a Glenmorangie with extra “yeasty” presence, especially its aroma. The yeast is definitely doing something alright, but I wonder if the translation is that straightforward? On the other hand, the palate is more akin to the house style of Glenmorangie, maybe the casks utilized here are less active and intent to let the distillate shine. Probably a rather technical dram, but it is rich, clean and sweet with nuances building nicely around the core. Solid drop.
