  • #Mauthausen #Concentration #Camp #Visit #World #War #II #History #Holocaust #Memorial

Mauthausen Concentration Camp established in 1938 had over 190,000 prisoners, of which at least 90,000 of them died there.

This visit was very eye opening to the true scale of atrocities made by the Nazis during World War II. I always find it difficult to truly empathize watching documentaries on TV, actually visiting a camp, felt very real.
Walking around the grounds, exploring the buildings and learning about their purposes and use was distressing. It was an educational and interesting experience yet very unnerving and disturbing. Difficult to believe the holocaust really happened. May it never happen again, lest we forget. #mauthausen #concentration #camp #visit #world #war #ii #history #holocaust #memorial Mauthausen Concentration Camp established in 1938 had over 190,000 prisoners, of which at least 90,000 of them died there. • Received this little grouping from @ww2_r_us2 today!
A Kriegsmarine eagle, a tropical eagle, a trade patch, a pair of Heer collar tabs, and 4 German death cards.
My favorite card is the one belonging to Josef Altmeyer. I translated his card and here is what it states:
“How do you like the last hour, longing for us in the home? Peace drinks in strange earth, never to be forgotten by us.
To the pious memory of our only, unforgettable, faithful son, loving our Josef Altmeyer
Who on 16 November 1943 gave his young hopeful life in the East for his fatherland at the blooming age of almost 19 years. His last resting place was at the Heldenfriedhof in Georgijewsk.
We recommend the soul of the one resting in enemy land to salvation. Sacrifice of priests at the altar and from the prayers of believers, on which they Rest In Peace!
In deep pain:
Fam. Josef Altmeyer-Blas and all his family.”
Cards like these make you see these casualties of war more like people instead of statistics.

Is fully in support not peace in n Sudan.
Over the past several days, a growing number of people have changed their profile pictures to a plain blue image in support of the north African country sudan, where peaceful demonstrators are being met with military violence. The months-long protests began with a 2018 uprising against then-President Omar al-Bashir, a brutal dictator who ruled Sudan for 30 years. Shortly after al-Bashir was ousted in April, a transitional military council took control to "retain order"; however, the council was made up of figures who shared al-Bashir's ideology. "All Sudanese people are in the street and demanding the downfall of the regime and not recycling the same people," The military have responded to the demonstrations with severe violence, including mass rapes and killings. On June 3, a paramilitary group murdered more than 100 peaceful protesters during a sit-in. One of the victims was 26-year-old Mohamed Mattar, who was killed while trying to protect his fellow protesters. At the time of his death, Mattar's profile avatar was the same blue image being used in the online movement.

Celebrities like Bas, Naomi Campbell, Demi Lovato, and Yara Shahidi have shown their support for Sudanese demonstrators by changing their profile pictures to blue. Rihanna, Cardi B, and SZA have also joined the online movement with Instagram posts that call attention to Sudan's crises.
