Upward facing dog.
This is one of the most misunderstood poses that I come across in every single class I teach. This pose requires that we find space through the spine so that we can protect our backs. All too often I watch people drop into this pose, compressing the lumbar spine as well as the cervical spine.
If you notice when I lower in the pose, on my inhalation I am drawing my whole body up and expanding through my back and chest so that there is absolutely no pressure to my lumbar spine. It is one fluid movement. Assuming my knees and pelvis is still on the floor, while straightening my arms and dropping my head back, there is going to be a huge amount of compression in the lower back and neck. Not ideal... This is one of those poses that often leads to injury. To correct your technique, go through your flow by first lowering your knees, then as you inhale lift the chest, untuck your toes and press up. Try to take your knees off the floor and as you do so keep lifting your chest higher.
Be humble in your practice. We don't need to do the complete pose right away. It takes patience and time. But if we try to rush it, then we are surely going to injure ourselves.
Enjoy the journey. Be ok with where you are. Because that is perfect. 💜

How is everyone’s 2019 so far? Do you have a theme you are working through or something that is showing up for you? For me this year is about balance. Balancing work and life, spending time in nature and nourishing myself with beautiful food, exercise and meaningful friendships and relationships. This morning I took some time out before work to relax in the sun at a local swimming spot and I am feeling refreshed and ready to take on the working week
Latest creation that I finally got around to finishing. Definitely wanted to toss this one away so many times. I'm still mastering the colour and texture of cliffs, the still oceans, and the whiteness of waves. Overall though it looks way better than it used to so that's an achievement for me! 🎨 12 Apostles lookout, oil on mdf
