Thalappakatti Restaurant is a popular franchise restaurant comes all the way from Tamil Nadu, India. Roots tracing back to 1957, their latest branch is now opened down De Fonseka Place, Colombo 5.

The Thalappakatti Special Mutton Biriyani (Rs. 790) was served with the sides of onion raita and gravy. Veering off from the usual basmati, this Dindigul biriyani is made with seeraga samba which is known be low on calories, and grown on the lands nourished by the Kodaikanal waters. Each and every grain of this biriyani was properly marinated in a homemade masala, while its flavors were boosted by the massive cubes of well-spiced mutton, and the heap of cloves and cardamom added to it
.
The mutton itself was chewy, beautifully cooked through in every layer, and had absorbed all the spices and flavors of the ingredients added to the biriyani
.
Chicken Varuval and black pepper chicken Indian style were two dishes whether the meat was so tender and succulent. Nicely marinated and perfectly cooked
.
Garlic Parotha (Rs. 200) for two, had generous amount of thinly chopped toasted garlic. We loved it!
.
The Jigarthanda (Rs. 350) is a glass full of pure happiness. This popular summer staple of Tamil Nadu is a combination of milk, almond gum, sarsaparilla root syrup, sugar and ice-cream, which makes for an ultimate drink to beat the blistering Lankan heat. It's sweet, but not as bad as Faluda

  • It was my first time ever at a @thalappakatti restaurant, and I went into shock the moment I stepped in for lunch. The restaurant was swamped with people, more waiting to be seated and a steady influx of walk ins. It’s chaos inside, but seemed like organized chaos (sort of). The captain takes your name down and calls out when a table becomes vacant. Surprisingly, we got ours in about 15mins, and I finally found out what the hype was all about. We tried the chicken biriyani, chicken 65 biriyani (huge mistake, cos one is sufficient for two), the chicken varuwal kulam, vanjaram fried fish, and egg vichu parota. The biriyani has a distinctive flavor with heavy emphasis on ghee. The chicken dish came recommended, but didn’t “wow” us. The fish and the parota were very nice, and the gulab jamun was perfection. I tried the famous South Indian summer beverage ‘jigarthanda’ for the first time. Not sure if it’s my thing. #Thalapakatti is definitely worth visiting. It’s a different kind of experience that’s worth the wait and chaos #thalappakattibiriyani #thalapakattisrilanka #indianfood #dindigulthalappakatti #thalapakattirestaurant #restaurantsincolombo #ovieats It was my first time ever at a @thalappakatti restaurant, and I went into shock the moment I stepped in for lunch.
