Today is Pamela "Pixie" Colman Smith's 141st Birthday! 🥳🎉
The potent illustrations she channeled are known all over the world as the "Rider-Waite" tarot deck or, more accurately, the Smith-Waite deck. Her symbol-heavy and richly mythic tarot deck ushered in a new era of divination and magic and was a radical departure from decks of the past. “...raise your ace of cups to the aquarian queer mixed race weirdo who illustrated the most famous deck in the world” @oliviapepper
Pixie Smith was a stage and costume designer, polymath, painter, folklorist, poet, author, magazine publisher, queer, editor, illustrator, suffragette, and publisher of books and broadsheets! She hung around and collaborated with dudes we hear about all the time, including Jack Yeats, Alfred Stieglitz, and Bram Stoker yet remains one of the many prolific womxn written out of history. She is quoted as referring to publishers as "pigs" and was acutely aware of the ways the patriarchal/white supremacist gatekeepers of art and publishing would prefer her silent, unpaid, and unknown. We see you, Pixie! We remember you and celebrate you! Happy BD!!

  • I watched the creation of the Cat Land Oracle by @joannanelsonstudio over the course of her Kickstarter. I love Joanna’s work, and you may be familiar with it from @78tarot
I think the gaze of these cats is so like that of my own cat, DoomKitty. This deck quickly became personal to me because of that connection.
Cats are sacred creatures, and their unique magic is honored here. As per my usual, I am drawn to the action cards. The doing of work to find my way through.

The first card to speak to me was Weaving, with its tiny spider. I think the way it hangs between the ears, connecting ‘listen’ to ‘knowing’ was especially timely for me. The stillness be give when we weave is important to pay attention to.

Echo Echo fell out as I was studying Weaving, and I decided that this time I would allow the deck to choose our 8 cards. I know when to listen, even when my lessons need to repeat themselves.

Attitude, Dream Maker, & Guidance came next. All three reminding me to remember how I found my way to where I am now, and who helped me get there. @trishswritingandtarot has written a perfect guidebook. She definitely leaves room for interpretation, which I find crucial to a successful oracle deck.

Tea Time, Kitten Senses, and Labyrinth came last. Bringing messages of self care, and finding my own way, and making sure I remember my responsibilities.

I love an oracle that I can pair with tarot, and this deck fits seamlessly with the 78 Tarot Mythical. More than that, I can drop it in my tiny purse and take these great big messages with me anywhere I go. If you do the same, you should be prepared for the attention they’ll get. I’ve been stopped six times and asked about their lovely artwork.
