How to Deal with Distraction
You may call it Squirrel!! or maybe Shiny Object Syndrome. I have somehow (completely illogically) morphed it into Shiny Squirrel Syndrome. Which may actually be exponentially more distracting than either Squirrel or Shiny Object Syndrome on their own!
No matter what you call it, if you suffer from it, you get it. Something always pops up on your phone or you remember something you forgot to do, or your loved one has an emergency you have to deal with, etc. Those 3 hours you set aside to work on your business somehow turn into 15 minutes, and then you wonder why your business never goes anywhere. .
You know there has to be a way around it. Other people manage to get their stuff done. Other people have successful growing businesses. Other people have built a large tribe of raving fans. So why them but not you? ADD? ADHD? Too much Spongebob as a kid? Not enough sleep? Lack of discipline? Weak mind? Laziness?
We all struggle. We all have distractions. I know I do. I went to the doctor a few years ago and tested OFF THE CHARTS for ADD. So believe me when I say I GET IT. I have been dealing with it my whole life. And it used to beat me. It used to win the day every day. But not anymore. It’s maybe only 50/50 now. Even increasing my time spent on task by 50% has made a huge difference in my business. Heck, 25% would be amazing most days.
So how do I do it? Here are my 4 top tools that I actually use - not some ideas from an article or blog. These are my actual regular practices. .
#1. Hire a coach. Always have a coach. .
#2. Manifesto in the morning. .
#3. Establish negative consequences. .
#4. Decide you are worth it. .
Squirrel is in the bird feeder and I'm ok with it. We don't have an abundance of mature trees in our neighbourhood so we don't get many squirrels at our house. Eat up little guy.
What’s that, wagging his big, brown tail? Are you trying to scare me?
I’m not afraid of you. I may not look it, but I’m a lady ninja in training
