Well-known humanitarian Sister Norma Pimentel, the head of Catholic Charities of the RGV, was optimistic about President Trump's recent visit to McAllen. She thought it would be an opportunity to show him up-close what life on the border is like, and give him a tour of the respite center that houses migrant families who have come to the U.S. seeking asylum. She was ultimately disappointed in the president's roundtable with community leaders, saying those leaders barely got an opportunity to speak up. "When he first walked in, he greeted everybody as he was walking in, and sat down and started talking to us,” she said. “We just listened to him talk.” President Trump had the families of people who had been murdered by immigrants speak to the group, followed by Border Patrol officials who reaffirmed his promise to build a wall. "I think it was carefully planned out so that nobody challenged him," Pimentel told Texas Monthly Editor Carlos Sanchez. "Nobody asked him anything different from what he thought."
