  • @runner.sam tagged me to share 10 non running facts about myself. Even though I’m convinced I’m basically the most boring person alive, I’ll give it a shot. 💁🏼‍♀️

1. I adopted Duke in October 2016. He’s from Tennessee originally and had heartworm when he was rescued. He underwent treatment the first few months I had him.
2. I’ve lived in the Albany, NY area my entire life, except.....
3. I was in a PhD program down at the University it Georgia for a short time before realizing it wasn’t a good fit and came home. But I’m still a diehard Dawgs fan!
4. I’ve broken a lot of bones. Six major breaks not counting fingers and toes because there’s been way too many of those.
5. I’m a huge Star Wars geek and can do the Chewbacca noise. But I’ll only do it for you if I really like you.
6. My favorite food is peanut butter. I order it through Amazon in bulk because I go through a jar every week.
7. I know the words to almost every single Taylor Swift song. Not even lying. Old Taylor, new Taylor. She’s my favorite.
8. Even though I’m a N.Y. native, I hate all NY sports teams. Go Colts, Bruins, Braves.
9. I hated studying during college and didn’t do it a ton. In my mind, lecture should have taught me everything I needed to know and if it didn’t, it was on the professor and not me. Young Stephanie was stubborn.
10. Those close to me know and I’m sure you all can tell from my crouching in photos, but I’m tall. I’m 6’1”. I was always the tallest growing up and even grew more in college. Thanks Dad. 🤣

  • In early March, I saw this sticker on the wall at Cafe 821. It touched me because the #dog looked so much like Jack and looked so happy. The woman looked so in #love with the dog. It seemed the picture of Jack and me. In April, we said goodbye to Jack. In May, I returned to Cafe 821. Immediately, I looked for the sticker. All I found was empty wall space. Now that Sadie has joined Jack, more than wall space at Cafe 821 is empty. There are two empty harnesses hanging in our laundry room. There are empty food and water bowls, washed and drying on our dish drying rack. Jack’s throne is empty. Sadie’s beds are empty. And there’s an empty place in my chest. But for all I seem to have lost on April 16 and June 15, I’ve gained so much.
More than emptiness, Jack and Sadie left behind #love in the form of a more attentive, intuitive, and thoughtful husband. They left me with walking and running routes I will continue to frequent. They left me with neighbors that have turned into friends. They left me with parks to explore. They left me #published in Chicken Soup for the Soul. They left funds to the #animals of RAL and the SPCA, as well as to BQS. They left me as a former RAL volunteer and a current SPCA volunteer. They left me a new, enlightened view on #dogs and a better understanding of parents. They left me memories, walks with Matty, and #writing gigs. They left me a neighborhood that has become a #home. The idea of my time with them being compartmentalized in my mind to “when we had Jack and Sadie” feels unnatural and impossible, but there’s nothing to do but keep going, even when it feels like I shouldn’t be able to. Our time together might be in my past, but their influence remains. “Anemal Forever.” #alldogsgotoheaven #mindthedog #mansbestfriend #lovethesedogs #lovemydogs #whippet #beagle #rescue #rescuedog #whorescuedwho #dogsarepeopletoo In early March, I saw this sticker on the wall at Cafe 821.
