  • #marchmeetthemaker Day 18 - Mistakes or Lessons:
I’ve had chronic bilateral low back pain for years, so this craft unfortunately stirs it up daily😖. Pottery is physically labor intensive and requires a lot of strength from your entire body, especially for wheel-throwing. And when you do this for hours at a time, for days at a time, you have to have ways to alleviate your pain. Important lessons I’ve learned are what to change in my practice to prevent injury and how to manage my pain. These are things that I’ve added to my routine that help me:

1. Being mindful of my posture. I try to catch myself when it’s bad and correct it.

2. Taking breaks! I try to do varying tasks so that I’m not stuck doing the same thing for hours on end. I.e. glued to my chair, or constantly hunching over my work.

3. Stretching in between tasks to prevent stiffness and flare-ups.

4. My tools and equipment setup are as ergo as possible. My doctor said a standing wheel would be best for me, so that’s what I use. I also use rubber ergo pencil grips with my paintbrushes - they save my hands from cramping up! 😁

5. I don’t overexert myself. When i’m tired or fatigued, I stop and take time to recover.

6. I keep the balance by being active outside of the studio. For me the key is improving my core strength, so i’ve gotten back into yoga/pilates. It makes my studio time much more comfortable.

It’s easier said than done, but i try and stick to these as much as possible! .

  • This month I was so lucky to have won the @theanjelmsproject give away!! Hurray!! 🎉 This is me wearing my new consciously hand plant based dyed wrap dress and one of my ceramics pieces. My first encounter with this brand was last year at #bazaar Fremantle Market were I purchased two wooden stamps that I have been using to create some of my latest ceramics. Since then I have been following their amazing story & today I feel blessed for this circle of creativity!! Thank you @theanjelmsproject 🙏😊
