Don't Force It
Viking Cues Tip of the Week with Mike Roque, author of “Build Your Game!” “Take things as they are. Punch when you have to punch. Kick when you have to kick.”
SIMPLIFY THE SHOT as much as possible by accepting what the table offers. Anytime you try to force position, you can complicate the shot with variables such as squirt, speed, deflection and spin.
If the natural angle of the shot offers reasonable position on the next, but doesn’t get you as close as you would like, take it! There’s no need to force the cue ball around the table to get a slight advantage when the natural shape is fine. If you force the cue ball, it’s easy to dog it, or get out of line on the next shot.
Whenever possible, play for position by pocketing a ball with as little english as possible and medium speed. These shots tend to play naturally. If you have a straight–in bank that offers perfect shape with a stop shot, take it. Why cut the ball in the corner and let the cue ball fly around the table?
There are shots where you will need to use a full load of english for position. Take one when you need it. However, don’t try to defy the laws of physics by overstretching the limitations of the shot.
Simplicity in shot selection develops consistency. Pick the shot that plays naturally. You will enjoy the game and run out more often!
Go with the flow.
Take what the table offers you.
