  • Francis Russell, 5th Duke of #Bedford (1765-1802) - English aristocrat and politician who developed much of the Bloomsbury area in central London.

Russell became Duke of Bedford aged only 6. His youth was pretty traditional: educated at Westminster and Cambridge followed by a few years doing The Grand Tour of Europe (the period equivalent of a gap year). The only interesting aspect of his trip was that the Russell got involved in a menage a trois with Viscount Charles Maynard and his wife while he was away. The arrangement lasted for three years and had the approval of Russell's grandmother - amazingingly liberal!

On his return to England, Russell became involved in politics. He joined the Whig Party led by Charles Fox and was part of the Prince Regent/George IV's social circle. Russell was a good speaker and debater but most of his time - like many other Whigs - was spent simply opposing anything put forward by the then-Prime Minister William Pitt.

Russell was also interested in agriculture and built a model farm at Woburn where he bred sheep. He also ran a stud farm for racing horses in the area.
He left his mark on London in #Bloomsbury. His family house was originally on north side of what is now Bloomsbury Square. In 1800 he demolished it and developed the land into a residential area with Russell Square as its focus. Russell died in 1802 and his title and the estate passed to his brother John who added #TavistockSquare in 1806. Much of the Bloomsbury area is still controlled by Bedford Estates on behalf of the #Russell family.

The Duke of Bedford monument was sculpted by Richard Westmacott and erected in 1807. It focuses on his farming interests, One hand is on a plough, the other holds a sheaf of corn. The suffragette sash is a 21st Century addition of which he would probably not have approved.
