  • ....#repost from 6years ago!!! one of the hidden gems in my hometown, not for great food and drinks; for the memories made there but more importantly for the lives lost. Prior to #PulseShooting in Orlando in 2016, the #UpstairsLoungeFire was the largest attack on LGBTQIA* in America and it happened in the #FrenchQuarter and very few people in the community outside #NewOrleans even know about it. I had the opportunity to touch it last Sunday morning, while in town, and it’s haunting that 46years ago we dealt with this, and every single day in the country there are acts of violence towards people in my community because of their sexuality or how they identify.
I’m still #hopeful that the world can be a kind place. ....#repost from 6years ago!!! one of the hidden gems in my hometown, not for great food and drinks; for the memories made there but more importantly for the lives lost. • Painting of Captain John Handy by Noel Rockmore - @64parishes

Captain John Handy would have been 119 years old today. After moving to New Orleans as a teen, he played music with bands led by musicians like Kid Thomas, Kid Sheik, Punch Miller and more. Though he was a multi-strumentalist from an early age, became known for playing Alto Sax and Clarinet.

Noel Rockmore (born Noel Davis) moved to New Orleans in 1959 and became recognized for painting jazz musicians in the early 1960s in his @preservationhall Portraits.
