  • I never understood the old saying “teach your kids about the #birds and the #bees” which is even more peculiar as a #beekeeper when you come to understand that honeybee #reproduction is quite a bit different than with people, in fact birds are way different too...so maybe that’s a euphemism for differences? I don’t know. .
.
Here in the photo we have what’s called a #matedqueen as opposed to a #virginqueen which would be much smaller in size due to her #ovaries not having expanded in her #abdomen. After hatching and becoming sexually mature a few days later, the new #virgin queen goes on a series of #mating flights over the next few days. This is one of the most dangerous times for a #hive as typically the old #queen has left or been killed and there are no more #eggs to make a new queen if she were to die or get hurt on these flights. She mates with several #drones per flight per day. Now here’s the interesting part. She is able to store the #drones #sperm for her entire lifespan of 2-3 years!! She has a special organ called a #Spermatheca (receptaculum seminis) which is about 1.1mm in diameter and it stores and keeps the sperm alive. .
.
Now here’s the even stranger part, The Spermatheca has a muscle that allows the queen to #fertilize or not fertilize and egg at will as she’s laying it!! Fertilized eggs become female workers (and can be used to make queens) and unfertilized eggs become drones, the males of the colony who make up around 10% of the population. .
