  • 100 BEATS!!!!!!!! NOW ON BANDCAMP!!! In 2002 there was a rumor going around Los Angeles that Count Bass D, #Madlib or somebody did 100 Beats in one week. At the time I was knocking out 5-10 beats a day, so hearing this Im thinking to myself; "a week, I can do 100 beats in one weekend" not knowing just how hard it actually is to make and finish a song or instrumental let alone 100 of them with-in a few days. So, I prepared for this “100 beat weekend” by spending the next couple weeks at Arrons records in Hollywood (before Amoeba) collecting as much source material as I could, mostly digging in the 29 cent record bins since I wasn’t making very much money at the time. I then took a page outta the movie Train-spotting and I stocked up on Starbucks coffee, a bunch of #weed , Top-Ramin, cereal and burritos from the CVS across the street, boarded the door shut, turned off my phone, and went at it. I officially started the clock at 5pm on a Friday, and I think went on till about 4am the next morning. Slept for about 5 hours, and went on for another 6 hours or so of making beats and then slept for another 4 hours, got up and worked for another 6 hours, and this was pretty much the pattern for the rest of the weekend. Overall the whole process took 4 days since I went into Monday afternoon till about 1pm.
After a few days of recuperating, I counted what I had and I think I went over by about 10 beats. A lot of these are good, some are garbage and some just sound unfinished. Although it was fun to challenge myself and really focus my energy to do this, I never wanted to do it again. Its really really hard and I commend anyone that does this. Big thanks to Dj Cee Brown and FatHed for each having 1 of the 2 cds I put the 100 beats on. I hadn’t had both CDs for at least 10 years and I though they were gone forever. So enjoy
