  • Last October, during a brief trip to Amsterdam, my good friend @eireannie introduced me to Volt Europa by inviting me to their European party congress which happened to take place in the city that weekend.

I was so impressed by what I experienced that day that I decided to join Volt as a part of the German fundraising team in the run-up to the European Parliament elections. Ever since, Iโ€˜ve been telling anyone who would listen about Volt, right after urging them to absolutely go vote in late May.

In Germany, the elections will take place in four days, so Iโ€˜d like to review the key reasons to #VoteVolt on Sunday:

1. Volt has a clear vision of a federal, more democratic, and more sustainable Europe. In view of the acute lack of visionary thinking in European politics today (except for Macron, but all the more so in Germany), this is not only refreshing, but remarkable!

2. Volt is truly pan-European! Because European problems, such as climate regulation, migration management, and digitalization call for European solutions. With a following of ~30k people in over 30 countries, Volt is running in the EP elections in 8 countries (DE, NL, BE, LU, SE, ES, BG, UK) with one single program: the Amsterdam Declaration.

3. Volt pursues a pragmatic best-practice approach to policy-making! Unconstrained by the outdated ideological left/right or green/liberal dichotomies, Voltโ€˜s policies are solution-driven and built on common sense. This is never easy, but always worth it.

Finally, the key reason why Volt will succeed is the people behind it, of course. The combination of young age, determination, and smart minds makes for a powerful cocktail, a force to be reckoned with.

Volt is the political start-up Europe never knew it was waiting for, a positive โ€žshock treatmentโ€œ for the stagnated EU establishment, as the Economist aptly put it. Volt is nothing less than a blueprint for the future of EU politics as it helps build and at the same time draws from the development of a much-needed European public sphere.

Drumrolls, please... Weโ€˜re about to see the first grains of a brand-new kind of popcorn pop!
