  • The Importance of Time. ⏳
#TheDoulaBook 📒
.
Time is our friend. It takes time to grow a baby. (I talked about some things to do during this time in my Jan 3rd post 😉). In labour, things take time. It’s really quite the process! And while we may think we’d like it to go faster, there is good reason for the sequence of events that precedes us welcoming our babies. 👶🏽
.
In labour, we need time in order to...
✅ ripen. Your cervix, that is. ✅ kick in. Your hormones, I mean. They’ve got jobs to do! ✅ maneuver. Your baby needs that time (and space!) to move into the best position to greet you. ✅ process. The labouring person needs time to mentally work through what is happening, and get into the right frame of mind for labouring. ✅ allow. Those of us supporting the birth, need to give the mother space and respect the time that it takes for all of the above to happen; for her (and her partner, as applicable) to make decisions when needed; for help to be requested and received; for strength to grow and empowerment to be realized. 💪🏻
.
It is important not to rush labour. In fact, the #WorldHealthOrganization recently came out and said exactly this! The WHO has advised medical birth attendants not to intervene to speed up labour unless there are real risks of complications. 🙌🏻 .
Usually a first labour is longer than subsequent labours. The prospect of a long labour can be daunting, for sure. But remember. This is nature’s way of carefully dilating the birth passage. First the cervix opens, then the birth canal, and then the baby passes through. Allowing these changes to happen gradually means your tissues have time to gently stretch as they are designed to do. So. Take your time. Your body knows what to do! Trust and believe. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. 🙉
