“Most of the films in the recent past have been made on a pace that’s faster than your heart beat and it pains me so much when people say that the film wasn’t fast enough. A film is a story that will be told at it’s own pace so stop going to movies expecting the film to flow according to your free time.
Gully Boy is one film where you feel the rhythm is right at every place unlike other musicals in the past like Bohemian Rhapsody where most of the moments are left incomplete without any closure. Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti have created it so well that each moment and character have a breathing space and at the end, they all have a closure which is very rare to see. From Alia’s character where the violence transfers from her mother at home to herself when she’s outside with others to Vijay Raaz’s character playing a suffocated father who opens up when he interacts with his family outside his claustrophobic house, emotions finally have a space to flow, each character is enjoyoble without it seeming unnecessary to the plot. Hats off to Ankur Tiwari for curating such perfect tracks that gels up with the visuals created by director on screen considering most of us are not familiar with the hip hop scene in India. It’s after a long time that the audience is high on the lyrics than the melody in the songs. And finally, what I loved most about the film was that it was an underdog story but at the end they don’t show the underdog overcoming everything, things get better but his struggle hasn’t ended because in reality it is like that!” - @tellmestories
