I figured — I rarely use my social media to share what my day to day 9-5 life looks like. You’ve always seen my highs and the glitz and glamour of my creative life but seldom have I shared my pledge to justice. It’s always felt personal - it was my duty. Not something I dwell on or put on the web but I figured with the end of this chapter, what better time than to convey what Black can look like in predominantly white institutions. Institutions that were never meant for us to enter or serve us. What barriers we are able to break down. What the power of the people can be.
On Monday, January 7th at 12:00 pm, I walked out of the Minnesota State Capitol for the last time as I completed my final day of service as Assistant Chief of Staff in the Office of Governor Mark Dayton.
Though tough to say goodbye, I am honored to have worked for the most progressive Governor the State of Minnesota has ever seen.
I thank Governor Dayton, Now Senator Smith, @joanemcafee, Joanna Dornfeld, and Jaime Tincher for believing a 20 something year old from the East Side of the Saint Paul, the daughter of two refugees, a product of poverty and social and political unrest had the ability to serve in the executive branch of our beloved state.
From my work as Policy Coordinator and Director of Federal Relations to serving in leadership as Governor Dayton’s Assistant Chief of Staff and transition liaison, the wealth of experience I gained and the amount of value I brought to the table was always acknowledged. Governor Dayton never shied away from surrounding himself with people of color and women with bold ideas that would push him to the limit. What’s crazy is that our administration felt limitless — the possibilities were endless and we strived for just that.
When I first started, I was so honored to have a seat at the table. From then on forward, I demanded one.
