  • Happy #TVReviewTuesdays! Today I would like to introduce you to a show that I LOVE and recently discovered, NBC’s The Good Place! You can watch the first two seasons on Netflix, and new episodes from the third (current) season with a Hulu subscription. Or if you’re one of those fancy folks with cable/an actual TV you can watch it weekly Thursdays on NBC! The premise is that Eleanor Shellstrop (played by Kristen Bell in her most unlikable/“love-to-hate” role yet) dies, and wakes up in what she believes to be Heaven, called “The Good Place”. The Good Place is run by Michael, played by Ted Danson, and features residents like the name dropping do-gooder Tahani Al-Jamil (played by Jameela Jamil, who side note IRL has used the platform she has gotten from the show to talk about some pretty amazing things like feminism, representation, and body positivity on her social media). While I am not usually the biggest fan of network TV today, The Good Place (along with Crazy Ex Girlfriend) is truly the funniest/best comedy on one of the big three networks. Eleanor Shellstrop’s secret is that she is actually a horrible person, and did pretty terrible things in her life, and must conceal her secret to stay in The Good Place, and not get sent to the bad one. In future seasons there are a lot of fun guest actors, including Maya Rudolph who is hilarious and was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for her turn on the show. The show is deeper than just a fish out of water comedy, as it discusses themes of mortality (which we are very cut off from in our modern society), right vs wrong, and the meaning of life itself. Comedies that balance hilarious scenes and dialogue with real issues that make you think really amaze me, and The Good Place is the perfect example of a hilarious show that will also give you lots to contemplate long after the credits roll.
