What even causes sea foam?
Sea foam is created by the agitation of seawater, when it contains higher concentrations of dissolved organic matter derived from sources such as the offshore breakdown of algal blooms.
As the seawater is churned by breaking waves in the surf, these elements act as foaming agents trapping air and forming persistent bubbles that stick to each other through surface tension.
Naturally, sea foam occurs worldwide and it is a habitat for a number of marine microorganisms who are feeding on it, so it has its own role in the cycle of nature.
Today though, sea foam often also contains trapped elements of pollution in the water, from stormwater drains or more toxic algae blooms and possibly bacterial loads that can be harmful to humans.
So while it is mostly okay to touch or kick the white fluff when you walk along the beach, definitively avoid ingestion, especially by younger children.
