Walking around this valley of entrada sandstone mud monsters by yourself at night is a spooky trip with or without a flashlight. Many of these formations are not much larger than your average human and it's easy to freak yourself out amidst the forest of ever shifting shadows. That said, the couple of nights I have spent wandering here alone or with my boy @djcaptainchoice are some of the more trancedentally outstanding I have ever experienced. Astrophotography purists may complain that the milky way is partly obscured by the clouds, but I actually prefer it here and in many other night sky shots. On this night the clouds came and went several times making me acutely aware of exactly how much light the stars were casting when they weren't blocked. To get this mid-March shot, I went to bed early and set an alarm for 2:30am when the milkyway core rose above the horizon. I don't do this too often as to not disturb my boothang, @stiggs510 in the camper(also b/c I like sleeping/being warm). However, witnessing the movement of stars throughout the night plus the transition to daylight is one of my favorites. Everytime pull one of these nights it makes me realize how much is going on and being missed while we sleep. As morning approached I climbed a bluff on the east side of this valley and watched a glorious sunrise light up a sky of wind-blown cirrus clouds over a vast expanse of desert, a perfect finale to another awesome night out in the world. From Tracy:
Who shoots with a crop sensor?? This is proof you can do it and get great images; tag a friend who shoots with one!

This was from the Badlands in New Mexico last year on The Great Milky Way Chase. The clouds were rolling in and out so, I set my 70d up for a time lapse and wandered around shooting with my 6d. I didn’t end up editing the lapse yet, but I decided to edit this to see how it would come out! This is 30 images stacked for the sky, and 14 images taken at Blue Hour stacked for the foreground in Starry Landscape Stacker
