  • So today’s #marchmeetthemaker is Design Process
When I know what size of object I’m making, I usually start with colours of glass and lay them out to see whether they work together.
I have loads of sketch books that I make notes and draw scribbly drawings in - mainly notes for what colour glass or powder I used. This is usually an afterthought as I normally get carried away and forget to write it down! I also have loads of pieces of paper in poly pockets with printed ideas and inspiration lurking around 😀
I always take a photo of the inside of the kiln just before I turn it on to cook so I can remember what I did! It is a great tool to see the development of a piece too. • #artworktoday - "Lao and Xiao" is an art piece of video installation, expressing the grandchildren's deep yearning for deceased grandmother. The audience can see the letter written to the grandmother being burned to the ashes while listening to the sound of incineration and the final announcement permeating deeply into the heart. The faint flame transforms the paper into various shapes, and eventually, the paper turned into ashes falling to our world. Meanwhile, those words on the letter being deformed in the shapes of thoughts and conveyed to another world. As a ritual, “burning incense and paper” breaks the bondage of space and carried faith with it. The other part of the device is the original copies of the burnt letter. The pile of paper represents the stack of thoughts. This work aims to demonstrate the overseas Chinese regrets and pains resulted from time and far distance. #asianfusiongallery.

  • #artworktoday - Composition 017 is a series of experimental representation of a three-dimension phoenix. Composition 017c is a technical shot of this creature. The design of the Phoenix is developed from an aggregation of the variation of a simple motif. The freeform surface and rational structure harmonize in this motif, showcasing a sense of both chaos and order. The three-dimensional combination of the motif deconstructs the anatomy of the Phoenix and create a different level of complexity and consistency #asianfusiongallery.

Composition17c, Digital Art, 36 in x 24 in.

Junchao Yang received a Master of Science in Advanced Architecture Design degree from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Through his exploration of technology, he finds his interest in the various ways of recreation of the common object and modern representation of traditional narratives.

  • #artworktoday - "Urban Shan Shui", 48" x 72" inch on fabric. Shan-Shui painting is a traditional representation of landscapes that were usually a projection of the imaginary. In a contemporary context, where time has shifted and culture has migrated, Chinatown of Manhattan has been developing and changing along with the city since the 1850s. “Urban Shan Shui” is a drawing done for a proposed cultural center in Chinatown where contemporary issues are being discussed through culture. The drawing itself challenges the clinging of traditions and openness to western culture #asianfusiongallery. *disclaimer: the project has no association with the logos used in the drawing.

Maxwell Chen is a New York-based multidisciplinary spatial designer. He graduated with a BFA Interior Design degree from Pratt Institute and is currently pursuing a Master of Architecture at Columbia University. Originally from Taipei, Taiwan, he is interested in the shift in cultural representations through time and space, mixing the old and the new, the traditional and the contemporary, into a story of spatial and cultural representations of Chinatown.
