People always love to joke about how I’m going to be “taken” on my trips, and how I’ll be screwed cause I don’t have a Liam Neeson in my life to hunt the guys down to save me.
I usually joke back that the sex traffickers would probably give me back after 20 minutes cause I’m annoying AF 😅. (One could hope)
But in all seriousness, I do keep in the back of my mind that crazy dangerous stuff like that happens and it’s my responsibility to make safe choices while traveling solo.
One of my most questionable choices occurred while visiting Christiania. I had a long layover in Copenhagen and decided to explore the city to pass the time. I heard mixed views about Christiania - some said it was chill and laid back cause there’s no government while others said it’s run by the mob and sketchy AF.
I never had any real intentions on stopping by. I just so happened to get lost while trying to find the Little Mermaid statue and bumped into two girls from Ireland and Finland who were heading to Christiania for a drink.
They had taken my photo early with the colorful houses on Nyhavn in the background. We had chatted a bit then - bonded over Disney, so when I saw them again, I figured a drink would be harmless.
Maybe I felt vulnerable because I had all of my belongings with me (Copenhagen Airport doesn’t have lockers or luggage storage - notes) or maybe it was cause the two girls also felt out of place or maybe a combination of both. But as soon as we all found seats, no one wanted to move to get the beers. I’ve been to the Red Light District in Amsterdam and assumed the two would be similar.
We made small talk with the people who let us join them at their table. They were high as kites, but nice at first. But then the convo turned weird as the sun started to set and thankfully, the two girls and I gave each other the same look that said we don’t want to be here when it’s dark.
Sometimes I’m surprised how quickly my little legs will move when something doesn’t feel right. I don’t know if I was ever in any real danger, but it was a good reminder to go with my gut feeling. And my gut was yelling at me to get the hell out of there before the sun set.
