  • Meet SocialVegan - Richie @richiekul (Part 2)

Intro in comments👇🏼!

👀Why became SocialVegan
Like most people, I've always abhorred violence. From a very early age, I committed to living peacefully and compassionately. But when I sincerely reflected on my daily habits and choices, I began to notice a glaring disconnect between my words and actions.
.
As a 13-year old, I went #vegetarian despite stiff resistance from my parents and relentless teasing from kids at school. But that was ok because this budding rebel was accustomed to tuning out and digging in. For the longest time I was convinced this youthful act of defiance was 'enough' - that I was no longer contributing to needless suffering. I realize in hindsight a lot of that was wishful thinking and perhaps I'd tuned out a little too much.
.
As the truth about violence and exploitation inherent in dairy, egg, fashion and entertainment industries became more widely disseminated, I could no longer seek refuge in the illusion that there's somehow a magically humane way to use and subsequently extinguish life. After 20 years as a vegetarian, I've been #vegan now for 4 years and my only regret is not having made the transition sooner.
.

Thank you @socialveganhk for the opportunity to share my thoughts. Love what you guys do and stand for in making #compassionate, #healthy living more accessible and aspirational here in HK. As a final thought, I'd like to share something I've been reminding myself of often lately - #veganism isn't a final destination so much as a humble starting point to living consciously and considerately. Going vegan is a noble endeavor but it's also a net neutral position - we don't harm but we also don't actively help the 65+ billion animals killed in the food, fur and entertainment industries each year. #Activism and spreading the word about the benefits of living compassionately is what will disempower these industries once and for all. It's the very least we can do for the beings still trapped within it. So speak up for them. Share links and videos that inspire you. Take friends to Dominion screening. Be the change you wish to see in the world.

Can you see the look of terror?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Seal hunting is rooted in tradition, like many outdated and abhorrent practices, and stems from tribal Inuit customs.⁣ Shockingly, seal hunting still exists today and is practised in several areas around the world. Most of the world's seal hunting takes place in Canada, during short periods of time when harp seal hunts are carried out.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The seals are primarily hunted for their skin, known as their pelt, which is used mainly for clothing, and in some areas where they are hunted, their flesh is eaten. Seal blubber is processed into oil and can be marketed as a fish-oil supplement or used industrially.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of seals are slaughtered each year, not including those that are not collected and have sunk to the bottom of the sea. The majority of those killed are pups. Firearms are the most common tool used to kill seals; however, hakapiks (long wooden clubs with a hammer head and metal hook on the end) are also used, as seen above. Hakapiks are used because they do not cause any damage to the pelt and therefore do not affect the profitability of the seal. Occasionally, these methods are not successful and the seals remain scared and in a great deal of pain when they are skinned alive.⁣
⁣
⁣Alarmingly, a 2007 report from the European Union concluded that “suffering in the Canadian seal hunt could be ‘largely avoided’ if hunters simply took greater care to ensure that a seal’s skull was crushed before they were hooked and skinned.” Yet suffering could be avoided ALTOGETHER if this industry ceased to exist.⁣⁣⁣
⁣
In recent years, many major markets have banned seal-fur imports, including the European Union, Mexico, Taiwan, the United States, and even Russia, which had been importing 95% of Canada’s seal fur. This has led to a major demand decline, but the hunting continues on.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Yes, there are traditional and cultural aspects of this industry, but they CANNOT be used as justifications. There is unacceptable cruelty in seal hunting—and a lack of necessity. No animal deserves to be hunted and killed for their skin.⁣⁣

Real Life Nemo 💙🐠

#Repost @shawnheinrichs: Did you know that fish have their own unique personalities and that we can actually form super cool relationships with them?
Ten years ago, a local dive master in New Caledonia named Marino met a baby anemone fish and they formed a unique and special bond. Even today, a decade later, the two unlikely friends have a very special connection.
We tend to look at fish as commodities in our food chain or emotionless beings without personality. I hope this story of Marino and Nemo can flip this misconception upside-down, revealing that so many creatures in nature have distinct personalities and behaviors. Fish have feelings, feel pain, and can be highly curious and social beings. Who would have guessed that a clownfish could form a personal relationship with a single person and recognize that individual and come out to greet them and play with them everyday?
Remember: when we recklessly extract marine resources, there are billions of little beings that are being affected.
New Caledonia is an oasis of marine stewardship in the Pacific Ocean, where national laws and traditional wisdom bring together communities, industries, organizations and governments to safeguard their marine treasures. By showing people what the successful conservation of reef systems looks like, hopefully we can engage wider and more diverse audiences to support conservation initiatives. Thank you to the dedicated team at @conservationorg for their relentless work to conserve the Coral Sea and its diversity — before it becomes endangered.
