We went to Amsterdam for a quick weekend jaunt, to blow away some cobwebs, and, I guess, to remind us why we work so hard. It was good. On Saturday night, after seeing art that reduced me to tears, and some of the best french food we'd ever had, we ended up in Amsterdam's best bar. Lured in by good, old jazz, and the unmistakable frosted window glow of midnight cosyness, we found a spot inside and drunk delicious strong booze. it was completely perfect.
Tiny, cramped, warm, cluttered, exquisite. It's been there since 1798, and has always been owned by the same family, the most recent generation having been in charge for the last 40 years.
I'm fragile, and often find it hard not to have my spiralling thoughts make me obsess over a future of "what ifs" or a past of "whys", but places like this make it impossible to escape the contentment of being in the moment. In a beautiful room, surrounded by welcoming strangers, with someone you love and a good drink in your hand.
