"I want to make a red vessel. Red is one of those colours which means something for everyone. From danger to good luck, from life to death.
For me, it’s the colour used most often for the important parts of manuscript texts. The scribe would highlight names or the beginnings of chapters, for example, with a bold vermilion, contrasting immediately with the ink black and the surface white.

The technique here involves exponentials. Each time I cut the clay in half and slam the two pieces together I double the number of layers: 2 then 4 then 8 then... after 20 iterations there are theoretically over a million layers. In practice it’s a lot less because I’m not that accurate with my cutting. But it doesn’t take long before the intense red stain has spread evenly throughout the porcelain.
Is it just me or do we always lose more than we gain? This careful gathering of colour contrasts vividly with my carelessness in real life."
