  • Day 20 of #MarchMeetTheMaker : Design process. My favorite part! For me it can happen a few different ways. Sometimes my designs are carefully planned out but often they are spur of the moment.  Often when I’m supposed to be making something else I’ll get inspired by an interesting shaped trimming or the need to repurpose scraps and end up coming up with something new on the spot.  Sometimes an idea will hit me and I’ll have to hunt down my sketchbook and get it on paper before I lose it.  The idea may sit in my sketchbook for a few hours or a few months before I get to try it out. Like these new moth designs I’m working on have been sitting in my sketchbook for what seems like forever, and getting to finally realize them in clay was SO MUCH FUN.  I love creating all the little details and designs spontaneously. It’s really play time, and no two are alike just like in nature.  The tricky part about ceramics is that there are so many stages where design happens, (sculpting the clay to create the form, glazing to add the color, finally adding the finishing touches in gold) and lots of wait time for the kiln firings in between.  It often takes months between having an idea an seeing it complete, but good things are worth the wait. Excited to finish these and share them with you! Day 20 of #marchmeetthemaker : Design process. My favorite part! For me it can happen a few different ways.
