  • It was with great privilege and honor that I was allowed into the space of the Amazing Grace Choir at @walkerwestmusic last week. I was there to capture content for a client yet was serenaded with song, prayer and history. Thank you so much again and Happy Juneteenth everyone!

By: @niqsanddimes “Juneteenth” marks the day that the last of those enslaved in what was previously the Confederacy during the US Civil War, were officially able to see their freedom actualized. Many enslaved persons during that time should have seen new rights as provided by the Emancipation Proclamation (1863), but in Galveston, TX, for instance, this was not the case. Through grassroots work, the people of Galveston were able to force the issue of their freedom and gain their rights (1865). With the joy of this victory stacked high - that community started their new lives with a celebration!
The celebration has grown over the years, nearly all 50 states observe its cultural significance for African-Americans and for the US in general. African-Americans, particularly those who are directly descended from enslaved Africans, continue to build on these traditions and many more.
Walker|West embodies a tradition of African-American creativity and excellence, through the creation of a music learning community rooted in the richness of black cultural experience. A community where people of all ages and backgrounds can gather, explore, and grow through music.
