  • I bought #TheStarSideofBirdHill 2 years ago because I absolutely ADORED the chic, sassy cover art designed by a wonderful contemporary artist from Barbadosย โ€“ @sheenaroseartist. I also just had to support Naomi Jackson, as sheโ€™s an alum of Williams College โ€“ #Middleburyโ€™s (my alma mater) sister liberal arts school in the boondocks! ๐Ÿ˜†

On the book cover, Dionneโ€™s (the protagonist) pouty lips look like sheโ€™s about to suck her teeth out of annoyance ๐Ÿ˜‚. In GH texting culture, we type sucking of teeth as - โ€˜mtchewww!โ€™ ; according to some of my Carib friends, they type โ€˜streupsssss!โ€™ or โ€˜schupppsโ€™ as sucking of teeth ๐Ÿ˜‚. Na lie?

โ€˜The Star Side of Bird Hillโ€™ is a heartfelt coming-of-age story that focuses on Bajan-American sisters: Dionne (16 y/o) and Phaedra (10 y/o) as they learn new things about their family, culture and even themselves during their summer vacation in Bird Hill, Barbados. I really appreciated Jacksonโ€™s easy-going, descriptive writing style. Her vivid descriptions of Barbados definitely made this a great summer read for me.

Iโ€™m not sure if the novel is considered YA, but I didn't expect tough issues like - depression, mental illness, death, divorce, suicide, homosexuality, bi-cultural upbringing challenges, Christianity, voodoo etc. to be tackled in this novel. I did love how Naomi Jackson pays homage to the women of Bird Hill, by showcasing the strength & resilience Barbadian women possess - through the characterization of Hyacinth: Dionne & Phaedra's grandmother & the real MVP of this novel, IMO! โ€ข (Link in bio for FULL review; reviewed June 2016) .
