  • Last week #YLSA Ost and Nord visited the @Lenzing AG and got some amazing hands-on insights into viscose production, about R&D activities and about new products in the pipline. Thanks to Danuta Mozdyniewicz, Eva Liftinger and Robert Bischof for the tour and the interesting presentations!

This was the first event of our new segment within YLSA events called YLSA&Friends, at which we invite guests from outside the life sciences to enable a new perspective on research topics. So thanks to our special participants that followed our invitations, the designers Anna and Nico!

At the end, of course thanks to our participants for support. You were very interested and asked a lot of questions, which was great! See you at our next events.

  • Education or Training? Preparing Girls for the Modern Workforce by @KatyPreen on Code Like A Girl ⠀
"Girls outperform boys at school, but fall behind in the workplace. What’s going on?⠀
⠀
I read a Forbes article on Medium the other day, Why Girls Beat Boys at School and Lose to Them at the Office, agreeing with some of its observations, but not others. The overall concept is true, though: girls can do incredibly well academically, yet fall behind when they get jobs alongside their male peers. The methods that girls develop to succeed at school don’t seem to work outside of that environment. But the article attributes this to a lack of confidence in girls, which seems like an odd conclusion given they were doing great right up until the day they left school, and then the decline began once they’d embarked upon their careers.⠀
⠀
The article asks “Hard work and discipline help girls outperform boys in class, but that advantage disappears in the work force. Is school the problem?” leading us to the answer that yep, definitely school. Not the workplace. Nope. And the reason suggested for this is that girls are working too hard at school, which then sets them up for failure at work because women feel they need to meet 100% of the requirements, whereas men only need 60%.⠀
⠀
That sounds plausible; initially when we decided we were going to help girls fulfill their potential, the emphasis was placed on ensuring they got the grades they needed for high-level jobs. Our obsession with testing creates a pressure-cooker environment in which the only way to succeed is to be the absolute best you can be; indeed it is encouraged. Boys might well take it easy at school, but it is them that should be encouraged to try harder, not girls encouraged to do less." ⠀
