Two hours into surgery, Susan’s mother loses oxygen to her brain and the plastic surgeon deliberately does not call 9-1-1 for fourteen minutes. Five days later, while in a coma, she flatlines. The surgeon is charged with medical negligence and her family falls apart; no one talks about what happened. Nineteen years later on her wedding day, Susan’s mother’s seat sits empty and Susan realizes she can no longer ignore what she’s always wanted: to know who her mother was. Sifting through thousands of deposition pages and reaching out to the killer’s family, Susan uncovers the painful truth of her mother, herself, and the impossible ideal of Vietnamese feminine beauty. My 8th book of 2019!
.
Forgive me for the cat when this is meant to be a #bookstagram of Great Pyrs and books, but let's be honest, its waaaaay easier to take pictures of cats with books than dogs. Also, I have seven pets, so over the course of this year you will likely meet my 2 cats and my bunny and my turtle in addition to my 3 Great Pyrs/Pyr Mixes.
.
This is Quickbeam. He's my husband's cat and is named after an Ent in Lord of the Rings. (Our other cat is similarly named Treebeard.)
.
Anyway, back to the book:
I'm always surprised how much I like to read contemporary love stories, especially because I don't usually like that type of movie. In fact, I finished this book today and immediately watched the movie and was sad that a lot of the depth (like the real story behind Rachel's move to America and most of Astrid's story line) was missing. I will definitely read the rest of the books because I enjoyed this one so much. I will also see the movies, but more so because I want Hollywood to know that I want more movies with non-white casts, not necessarily because I like this type of movie. Representation matters a lot and sitting through a rom-com is the absolute least I could do! ⭐⭐⭐⭐ My 8th book of 2019! .
