Here's a really rough tutorial on how I draw my skin! It's not very through since I didn't have enough space to write a lot, so I'll be noting some tips below ^-^ 1) Sketch: try to keep it clean, erase the extra lines. This will make your life easier later on.
2/3) When choosing a color for the shadows, a common mistake is picking the same color as the skin tone, but darker. However, this makes the skin look dead and uninteresting. Instead, use hints of a different, more saturated color, like a richer red or even purple. If the character is bathed in cool light, pick cooler colors accordingly. A common place to drop shadows is right below the nose, under eyebrows, under the lower lip, and under the chin.
4) This step is to make the lines look less unnatural and blend in more with the rest of the skin.
5) Keep eyedropping for a smooth transition, you my also opt to use a blend feature although I find that painting with the eyedropper gives me more control over the final product.
6) Remember that the whites of the eyes are not pure white, they are usually grayish or pinkish. If you make then pure white, the effect may seem unnatural.
7) Same steps in 2/3 apply for highlights: don't just pick the same, lighter color! Here I used a greenish highlight to complement the red shadows. Highlight tips of the nose, foreheads, cheekbones, and protruding parts of the face.
