  • Today’s #newlistening is the latest Weyes Blood album, Titanic Rising. It’s really good. It’s art/progressive/baroque pop, whatever you want to call it. I feel like those 3 genres are interchangeable. Anyways, this is a really beautiful album. This is the most obvious thing to point out, but it deserves mention. Natalie Mering has a stunningly beautiful voice. The choruses on some of these songs just blow me away because of her singing. The main melodies themselves use an extremely simple instrumentation, almost giving the songs a country-like feel. Despite this simple instrumentation, the songwriting absolutely carries this album. It’s used in glorious combination with the vocals. Conceptually there’s really nothing entirely new here. The song Movies is like Enya+Muse+Radiohead, yet it’s one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. I know I said the instrumentation is simple, and I still stand by that, but it’s still super diverse. You’ve got country sounding songs like I already said, ambient style songs, and basic pop style songs. I really don’t know how to describe how great this album is. Harmonies and melodies are all chosen so perfectly and even though it’s not conceptually challenging, it’s still unpredictable in many ways. I’ve probably already listened to this album 6 times, which is why this took so long to put out. If I had to complain, some songs aren’t quite as mind blowing as others, but they’re still great. At the end of the month I’ll be posting a #newlistening recap. Maybe like top 10 best albums so far and 5 worst albums so far? idk.
