  • Catholic devotees celebrate the Feast of Saint John the Baptist in the Philippines.

People cover themselves in mud, dried banana leaves, vines, and twigs as part of a little-known festival.

It has been celebrated across the Catholic-majority country since 1944, when heavy rain supposedly prevented the execution of 14 villagers by Japanese soldiers.

This year bishops have urged the congregation to celebrate the day without wasting water as the country suffers from a prolonged period of drought.

The match was full of drama: a Cameroon player appeared to spit on Toni Duggan’s arm, another England player got an elbow to the face and the African side reacted with fury to two VAR decisions that went against them.

After the match, England manager Phil Neville said he was “ashamed of the behaviour of the opposition” and that it “wasn’t right” for “young girls out there seeing that behaviour”.
