"When I was in Class 9 I got badly beaten up by people in my hometown for playing as a goalkeeper for a rival team. I was 14. What did I know about rivalries? But the incident made me determined to somehow make a career in football. I would cut classes and go to the beach to practice keeping. My family was going through a rough patch after my father's drinking problems got really bad so there was no one to train me. I did end up getting injured a lot but the effort I put in helped me find a place in the Sports Authority of India Academy. I used to survive with a small stipend of Rs 800 those days. My first break came when a prominent #sevensfootball team from #kozhikode signed me up. I would earn Rs 600-800 per match which was a big improvement. Later, I got my first professional contract with Pune FC."
"Life is tricky and riddled with challenges. I survived poverty to help my brother set up a successful business and build a career in football. Today I play for the champions of the country. The idea is to wake up every day willing yourself to survive whatever life throws at you."
The journey to becoming a professional athlete in India isn't all rosy. #theotherside is a photo series that hopes to highlight this. #mentalhealthmonday#thewarriordiaries#indianfootball#sports
