  • Debbie Reynolds & Bob Fosse in Give a Girl a Break (1953). “My first part was a big one, in Give a Girl a Break....Then my parts got smaller and smaller so I got out,” Fosse said. “I had ambitions to be a performer, but I somewhere along the way saw I wasn’t as good as Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire... I decided I wanted to go in another direction.” The other direction of course being choreographing and directing stage and screen musical blockbusters like Cabaret, The Pajama Game, and Damn Yankees.

He was a great choreographer dancer and director. His form is great in this but I can bet you he kept getting direction to stop looking at his feet. Dancers have a habit of looking at their feet. It works on stage but on camera--- we just see the top of his head. Which is balding. Hollywood is a shallow bird. You don't get multiple shots at a lead and he came along a few years later when the studio system was petering out. Fosse was not a follower and marched to his own beat--- he was destined to create his own works.

Debbie Reynolds never ceases to amaze me when I watch these dance numbers from movies. She had learned gymnastics in her youth, but was not a dancer. She learned to dance for movies, and became one of the screens best.💃🏻🙌🏻👏🏻

His second wife, Joan McCracken, encouraged him to start choreographing, and Gwen Verdon’s pretty much responsible for him becoming a director.

Whoa first time I see Bob Fosse dance. 👏👏👏 ✨Getting out was the best thing he did for his career ✨

Almost no cuts and full-body shots. Ah, for the old days.
